The joy and pain of Homeworld

What a terrific game this is, really a wonder.  Except is there no
master list of what I’ve already built that I can select and de-select
units from?  If not, that is a pain…albeit one I’m willing to put up
with.

No, there is no master "built" list.  It would be nice.  Personally, I’ve
purchased by group, let them form up in "mall parking lot" formation
alongside MS, Ctrl-# the group and move them off to a specific location.  By
making sure most ships get assigned to a hotkeyed group, you can quickly
review just by hitting the hotkey and "F" to focus on the group.  This can
be done while paused and I’ve taken out the old pen/paper to track group
    composition on occasion.

I remember reading about hotkeys, I just hadn’t looked into actually
    using them.  Thanks!

    Clinton,

I really never needed what you are describing (wanting). Simply find ships
on the master radar screen and number them with CTRL-1, 2, etc. Having a
group of one type of ship is plain stupid in this game, so have one group be
a small mix of fast fighters/corvettes, make another one of these, call it
#2, and then have these two groups out in the middle space for light
skirmishes, and throw a light cruiser in the vicinity for refuel/rearm. Then
make a strike force, #3, with cruisers, escort fighters/corvettes, make a
few of these, then make a full assault group, with heavy cap ships, escorts
of cruisers, then corvettes, and maybe a carrier. you get the idea.

That sounds very nice.  Thanks for the strategy tips…I’ll check ‘em
    out this weekend!

The only prob with mixing strikes with caps is the refuelling.  When the
strikees start to whine, its easier to hit the Ctrl# for the whiner strikees
and have them dock with a nearby support frigate.  Once refuelled,  they can
be reassigned to Guard a capship group.  Of course, if you’ve got refuelling
turned off, its not a problem.

    Good hunting.

not to mention that the fighters will race off whenever you move a combined force, leaving your cap
ships undefended (unless you guard them, which makes those fighters useless for anything else).
homeworld has no real formations, so it is easier to keep units seperate

Any one went thru the pain of making a custom formation?
Also can one save and load many customs for later use?
